Workshops

At the heart of the Waldorf method comes education as an art- it must speak to the student’s experience, educating the whole individual, where the heart, will and mind are reached togetherRudolf Steiner.

Step Together workshops are designed to improve students’ fine motor skills, imagination and help them become productive members in society.

 

Mineral Kingdom

Mosaic:  In this workshop, students create mosaic artifacts of different designs by placing colored cut stones inside a wooden or pottery frame that they have priorly prepared in the wood class. These artifacts include coasters, placemats, tea boxes and trays. Benefits: Improves motor skills; enhances imagination and creativity.

Candle Making: In this workshop candles of different shapes and sizes are made for use in the classrooms, residential activities and celebrations. They are also a source of income for the Association as they are sold during bazaars and events. Benefits: Candle making gives the students the satisfaction of being productive; at the same time candle making emerges a relaxing and a spiritual atmosphere.

Pottery and Clay Workshop: Students understand and grasp the basic pottery techniques. They are granted the chance to carry on with their tasks on an individual basis or as part of group class. They work with different types of clay while they are introduced to various tools. In the process, they learn how to shape and form distinctive designs by applying beautiful colors, patterns and decorations. The items include bowls, vases, jugs and pots.Benefits: Pottery is a valuable therapeutic activity that improves fine motor skills, builds up self-confidence, and boosts enthusiasm.

Bead Making: Students use recycled colored bottles and glass to make necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
Benefits: Bead Making enhances concentration as well as the concept of recycling to protect our green environment.

 

Animal Kingdom

Weaving Workshop: During class, students learn different weaving techniques. According to their abilities, they are involved in making useful fabric items such as tablecloths, blankets, rugs and cushions. The basic knowledge for weaving is learnt under the guidance and demonstration of the craft tutor who explains the process of alternating over and beneath the thread using different types of looms. In some cases, students are encouraged to develop color appreciation to expand their skills.
Benefits: Weaving enhances the students’ fine motor competence, improves their level of patience, and build their concentration.

Sewing & Embroidery: In this workshop, students learn how to make tablecloths, American table sets and pencil bags. They also learn how t remove clean the embroidered towels and napkins from threads, fold and pack them. After completion, they also learn how to decorate these items with cross stitch designs and shapes.
Benefits: Sewing and embroidery improve motor skills and help students to build and enhance the counting ability, emphasizing logic and control.

Felting: Felting is an activity that is fun and easy to learn. It involves creating textile material using warm, soapy water and rhythmical movement of the hands over wool fibers. The end result felted piece is used for decoration purposes or sewn into a variety of objects, such as purses, clothing, bags, dolls, toys and other creative and useful items. The students are encouraged to participate at all stages of the process according to their skills and abilities.
 Benefits: By Shaping or creating colorful patterns and pictures with the wool, students express their own feelings and creativity. Felt work entails concentration and direct application of will. It has a restful and calming effect and stimulates a warm and peaceful working atmosphere.

 

Plant Kingdom

Soap Making: Students observe the process of soap-making to learn how different designs and shapes are carved, and how soap bars are sorted according to colors, shapes and designs. Benefits: Improves the sense of smell, develops coordination and imagination as well as the willing forces.

Distilling Workshops: “Seed to Product” Workshops were established under the Patronage of Minister Layla el Soleh on behalf of Al Waleed Bin Talal Humanitarian Association. The workshops include molasses making, distilling Rose Water, Orange Blossom Water, and Sage.

Bakery: In this workshop, students learn how to make dough and bake cookies and pastries. They also learn to make delicious, healthy cakes. Benefits: Improves students’ coordination and their ability to follow instructions in sequence. Develops their sense of touch, smell, and taste, as well as the concept of measurements.

Basket Making: Students learn how to make colorful designs of baskets, trays, hats, and crafts. Benefits: Develops students’ fine motor skills, creativity and coordination as they learn to follow instructions and rhythms.

Binding Workshop:  One of the students’ most enjoyable workshops is the copybook binding. In this workshop, students design different sizes of covers with their own drawings then bind them to make wonderful and useful copybooks with their illustration on the front page.
Benefits: Papermaking aims to establish teamwork, also aims to raise awareness on the recycling importance and the responsibility of humankind contribution in saving the environment.

Gardening & Farming: Students look after the school gardens that grow fruits and vegetables and that serve their small residential community. Groups of students are responsible for caring and helping the school’s animal farm.
Benefits: Gardening is a thrilling activity that helps our students develop an interest in nature that teach them to keep the environment clean, protected and in good shape.
